Scorpaena plumieri Bloch, 1789
Scorpaena plumieri, the spotted scorpionfish, is a species of venomous marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Scorpaenidae, the scorpionfishes. It is found in the Atlantic Ocean.
The spines located on the back of the fish can inject venom, so these animals can pose a danger to humans. The venom is composed of hemorrhagic, hemolytic and proteolytic activities, as well as cardiotoxins, which result in a drop in blood pressure, and heart and respiratory rate. Symptoms include excruciating pain at the site, followed by edema, erythema and occasionally skin necrosis, other symptoms include adenopathy, nausea, vomiting, agitation, malaise, sweating, tachycardia, arrhythmias, difficult to breath and severe hypotension.
