This sponge is orange to red, has a short trunk and leaf-like segments, grows upright and the surface is slightly hairy, but looks smooth to the observer.
The individual leaves are approx. 4 cm in size, the entire sponge reaches a size of approx. 20 cm.
Clathria dayi is known from South Africa and can be found there in rocky reefs at depths of 15 - 272 m.
The broad-leaved sponge is a filter feeder.
