Info

The sponge's surface is decorated with many closely spaced, pointed micro-cannulas, which usually divide once or twice at their tips and end in flat, lamellar surface projections.
The surface of the sponge is decorated with many closely spaced, pointed microcannulas, which usually divide once or twice at their tips and are located at the ends of flat, lamellar surface processes that surround the edges of the hollowed-out channels and connect to form a honeycomb surface structure.
The texture of Clathria (Thalysias) hirsuta is firm, compressible and difficult to tear. The oscula are distributed over the surface and are located between the microconules.

Dimensions: Specimen from New Caledonia:
Fingers up to 65 mm long, 40 mm wide. 30 mm thick, the surface conules are 2–4 mm long, 5–9 mm wide, up to 2 mm thick.
The oscules reach a diameter of up to 5 mm and are distributed over the surface between microconules.

Color: bright red, vivid veins (Munsell 2.5R 5/10), paler between the veins (specimens from Queensland, Australia)
Color: Specimens from New Caledonia: tips of the surface microcannules red, honeycomb part of the sponge column mauve-red, with slightly striped, pale surface structure
tips of the surface microcannules red, honeycomb part of the sponge column mauve red
Color: The sponge from Mozambique is, seen from the photo, rather orange, but this may be due to the incidence of light or a lamp.
The Hydrozoon Zyzzyzus warreni Calder, 1988 (class Hydrozoa, phylum Cnidaria) was found on one of the specimens.

Synonym: Clathria hirsuta Hooper & Lévi, 1993 · alternative representation (subgenus assignment)
