Info

Pterois cincta was first described by Ruppell (1838) on the basis of a single specimen collected in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and as Pterois cincta. Klunzinger (1884) subsequently reduced Pterois cincta to the junior synonym of Pterois radiata, due to its similar body colouring, a decision that had been taken for a long time.

At least since the "Redescriptions of Pterois radiata and Pterois cincta (Scorpaenidae: Pteroinae)" by Dr. Mizuki since August 2015
it is undisputed that Pterois cincta is a recognised species endemic to the Red Sea but spatially distinct from the Indo-Pacific lionfish Pterois radiata.

If you take a closer look at these two species, the differences in the length of the fin rays become obvious.

The work of Matsunuma & Motomura showed that many of the specimens studied inhabited sandy bottoms of coral reefs at a depth of 5-15 meters, which must look like a "set table" for fish hunters like the Red Sea lionfish due to the species richness of coral reefs.

Divers, snorkelers and bathers should never touch the fish, wear sturdy bathing shoes and consult a doctor immediately in case of stab wounds.

It is conceivable that Pterois cincta, as a supposed Pterois radiata, lives in one or the other large aquarium, always feed with feeding tongs!
