Common synonym
Gobius strictus Fage, 1907 (juveniles of G. cruentatus).

Length: 12 - 18 cm.

Colouration
Red lips. Body dark and light brownish marbled; in the midline a row of large dark spots. Bright cross-lines at the back. Narrow bright stripe in the nape, above the basis of the pectoral fin. Top of D1 bright.
Juveniles: no red lips; body not marbled. Not easy to recognice.

Description
Anterior nostrils with single tentacles. Praedorsal area and nape scaled.
Males produce sound during threatning.
52-58 scales in lateral series.
Fins: D1 VI; D2 I+14; A I+12-13; P 20-21.

Food
Carnivorous; preferably mysids but also other crustaceans, other evertebrates and small fish.

Reproduction
No informations. Spawning probably late spring and early summer.

Habitat
5 - 35 m. Rocky shores. Sometimes on small sandy areas and close to sea grass. Common, in some regions very common

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
