Amblyeleotris wheeleri, (Polunin & Lubbock, 1977)
Usually found in rubble areas near or within coral reefs and in symbiotic association with alpheid shrimps, most often with Alpheus ochrostriatus. Found in coastal sand slopes and deep lagoons, shallow to 40 meters depth range.
Sex and mating
There are no known visual differences between the sexes in this genus.
Furthermore, the sex of this species is determined after hatching and cannot be changed (gonochoric). The sex develops during spawning and is determined by the water temperature.
Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
