Tanacetipathes hirta is a deep-water gorgonian whose deepest distribution has been documented at 347 meters; another coral (Tanacetipathes cf. hirta) was observed off the coast of Florida
on May 26, 2011, at a depth of 430–450 meters using an ROV.
The colonies of Tanacetipathes hirta are upright, rigid, moderately to sparsely branched, and typically arranged in a single plane like a fan.
The individual branches consist of several pinnules resembling a bottle brush.
The gorgonian's colors range from gray to brown.
