Info

All species belonging to the class Ascidiacea are hermaphroditic.

The ascidian Phallusia lat is a solitary ascidian, which therefore does not form a colony. It has a thick, translucent, cartilaginous tunic, which is very well permeated with a network of blood vessels.

It can be difficult for the layman to distinguish the different types of Phallusia, and many have been misidentified as Phallusia nigra Savigny, 1816.
Optical differences in the ascidians can be seen on page 3 of the article “New records of solitary ascidians on artificial structures in Singapore waters”.
We have provided the link to the article under “Further Links”.

It is difficult to keep sea squirts in saltwater aquariums because the animals, which are filter feeders, need to be continuously supplied with food. However, too many nutrients in an aquarium can be problematic if, for example, Acropora hard corals and other hard corals are to be cared for in the same tank.
The formation of unwanted algae can be another unwanted consequence. In any case, the water values must be checked regularly if you do not want to lose any animals.
