Info

Photos of live wrasses of the species Polylepion russelli are highly rare, in this case we sincerely thank NOAA Ocean Explorer program "Okeanos Explorer" for this photo.

Polylepion russelli lives in water depths that divers cannot normally reach, the photo was taken from an ROV.
Unfortunately, due to the water depth at which the wrasse lives, detailed information about the lifestyle and biology of this animal is lacking.

Synonym: Bodianus russelli Gomon & Randall, 1975

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
