Info

Thylacodes grandis (Gray, 1842)

Worm snails of the genus Thylacodes were formerly listed in the genus Serpulorbis. They have no operculum. These worm snails build a calcareous tube on solid substrates. Due to their appearance, they are sometimes confused with tubeworms of the family Serpulidae.

The diameter of the tube is 2.5 cm.

Like all worm snails, Thylacodes grandis feeds on microorganisms, which it captures with mucus threads. The threads are drawn in together with the microorganisms and eaten.

Members of the genus Thylacodes belong to the non-operculate marine worm snails, they have NOT developed an OPERCULM in the course of evolution and still manage, more or less successfully, to protect themselves.

Synonymised names:
Vermetus grandis Gray, 1842 (original combination)
