The distribution range of Chromis fumea extends from Chiba Prefecture, central Honshu (east coast), Japan to the Ryukyu Islands and southward to Taiwan.
The only record south of Taiwan is from Tioman Island on the east coast (South China Sea) of Peninsular Malaysia.

The preferred habitat of the damselfish consists of rubble substrates or a mixture of rocks, rubble and sand.

The Chromis fumea species complex also includes Chromis nitida (Whitley, 1928) from the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and as far south as New South Wales. and Chromis norfolkensis (Allen & Allen, 2021) from northwestern Australia.
