Calappa gallus (Herbst, 1803)
The Box Crab or shane-faced crab get their name from the large, shovel-shaped claws that are held in front of their faces. These crabs use this to protect their mouths and eyes from the ingress of sand and mud when they burrow into the ground. The armor width is 8 cm.
The Rough Boc Crab occurs in coastal waters up to a depth of 218 m. burrows in sand and muddy sand substrates, but is also occasionally found on hard substrates, reef surfaces, coral, shell and rocky bottoms.
