Husbandry

Arothron meleagris (Lacepède, 1798)

Arothron meleagris, also known as guineafowl puffer fish, is widespread found throughout the Indo-Pacific from the east coast of Africa to South Africa, east to Japan and Panama and the Gulf of California on the west coast of America.

Arothron meleagris owes its name "Guinea Fowl Puffer" the many white spots that cover its black body. There is also a yellow, not spotted color form, as to seen in our pictures above, but this is rarely found in its area of distribution.

Mainly they feed on coral polyps, but otherwise, he is not picky with his food and eats sponges, bryozoans, mollusks, crustaceans, tunicates, algae, foraminifera and detritus as well.

He's definitely not a candidate for a Coral Aquarium and should not be associated with other invertebrates as well.

Class: Percomorpha
Order: Tetraodontiformes
Family: Tetraodontidae
Species: Arothron meleagris
