Info

Velella velella (Linnaeus, 1758)

The By-the-Wind-Sailor ,Velella velella, is a cnidarian (Cnidaria) belonging to the Hydrozoa. It plays no role in the marine aquarium hobby and is not known to be kept. They live worldwide in subtropical, including the western Mediterranean, and tropical seas on the surface of the high seas.

Sail jellyfish cannot move actively, but are driven by the wind. The hydrozoan polyps form animal colonies that look like small rafts with sails and can be washed ashore in large numbers during storms. They feed on small planktonic organisms.

Predators of the sail jellyfish include the pelagic nudibranch Glaucus atlanticus and the violet snail (Janthina janthina).
