Diese charakteristische, aber variable Art hat aufgrund ihrer unterschiedlichen Wuchsformen mehrere Namen erhalten. Diese reichen von niedrigen, buschigen Kolonien mit einer Höhe von nur 4–5 cm bis hin zu eher langgestreckten, spindelförmigen Formen mit einer Höhe von 18–20 cm, die dem Aussehen von Muriceopsis flavida nahekommen.
Die Kelche von Muriceopsis sulphurea sind ausgeprägter als die von Muriceopsis flavida, und ihre Spikulen sind gröber und reichhaltiger skulpturiert.
