Info

Linnaeus, 1758

The sea hare (Cyclopterus lumpus) is a rather plump fish that lives on the bottom. It comes from the family Cyclopterideae (order Scorpaeniformes (scorpionfish relatives)). Its length is approx. 60 cm (source FishBase).

It occurs at depths of approx. 50 - 400 meters, so it hardly plays a role in home aquarium keeping. Care is therefore probably reserved for zoos.

Due to the lack of a swim bladder and the transformation of the pelvic fins into a kind of suction cup, it is adapted to life near the bottom.

The lumpfish prefers a rocky seabed and is also found in the cold waters of Greenland.

German caviar” is obtained from this animal.
