Info
Kamoharai's sand perch is only known from a few Asian habitats, where the perch rests on the bottom as a lurking hunter and waits for suitable prey.
Sand perch should not be introduced into a community aquarium, if at all into a fish-only aquarium, as their hunting behavior causes considerable disturbance in the tank.
As the name sand perch makes clear, the bottom of the tank should have a layer of sand and some hiding places.
Coloration:
The body of the perch is brown to gray, the lower half of the body is whitish as in almost all fish, 7 - 8 dark transverse bands run across the body of the fish, at each lower end of the bands there is a black spot, usually with an orange border.
Etymology:
The species name “kamoharai” was given in honor of the Japanese ichthyologist Toshiji Kamohara (1901-1972), University of Kochi, who secured the species at a fish market.
We would like to thank Satoshi Yamamoto, Japan, for the photos of this species.
