Info
Sanguinolaria tellinoides is a bivalve mollusc from the Psammobiliidae family, the sand mussels.
The shells are thin, almost translucent and have an oval profile.
Both shells are the same size and shape and have a low beak, the front part of the shell is broadly rounded, the rear part is narrower and elongated.
The outside has very fine concentric grooves and is pink, rose or purple in color with some white spots; the inside is often darker, reddish purple.
Due to its colouring, the mussel, which is often washed up on the beaches, is very easy to recognize and identify.
The shell has a shiny surface on the inside and outside, reaching a maximum length of 7.5 cm and a height of 4.7 cm.
Sanguinolaria tellinoides lives buried in sand substrate in the intertidal zone down to a depth of 14 meters.
Sanguinolaria tellinoides is only known from the west coast of the USA, through Central America to northern South America.
Synonyms:
Sanguinolaria purpurea Deshayes, 1855
Sanguinolaria tellinoides elongata Mörch, 1860
Tellina miniata A. Gould, 1851
