Info
Beryx splendens Lowe, 1834
Adult animals live in areas of 180 meters to a depth of at least 1,300 meters,at night the fish are probably further away from the seabed. In the Caribbean, this species forms dense shoals, females have a higher growth rate than males. Males reach sexual maturity at the age of seven to eight years, females at six years.
A study off New Caledonia in the southwest Pacific indicated that Beryx splendens growth increases during El Niño events and decreases during La Niña events due to temperature fluctuations.
Larvae and young animals are transported by currents in an oceanic eddy system and can enter new marine zones.
Habitat: Glistening slimehead is commonly found over seamounts and undersea ridges.
Human use: These fish are marketed frozen and are eaten steamed, fried, grilled, boiled, microwaved, and baked.
