Info

Chondrosia collectrix is a thickly encrusting (1 -3 cm thick) to lobed marine sponge that is brown on the outside, black to light brown with darker spots, and light brown on the inside.
The sponge has a smooth surface and round oscula with raised membranes, overall this species has a very cartilaginous consistency.

Other descriptions differ from the above, as do photos, especially of Sponge Base:
Color: Shiny black, tough pads or encrustations without spines.

Description of SeaLifeBase: Black to dark brown or tan on the outside on parts not exposed to light, tan on the inside.

Description: The first description of the species "The porifera of the Bermuda archipelago" describes the sponge as gray and pale.

Synonym: Cellulophana collectrix Schmidt, 1870
