Info
Conopea saotomensis is a barnacle associated with gorgonians.
The barnacle Conopea saotomensis has already been detected on the following horn corals:
Eunicella kochi, Leptogorgia ruberrima, Leptogorgia varians, Leptogorgia gaini, Leptogorgia ruberrima, Leptogorgia dichotoma, Leptogorgia dakarensis, Leptogorgia dakarensis and on two unknown / unidentified gorgonians.
Barnacles cover a variety of surfaces, attaching to hulls of boats, rocks, and many marine animals such as whales and coral, in this case horn coral.
These small crustaceans live as filter feeders and do not harm affected marine animals, however they are very undesirable on boat hulls as barnacle infestation slows down cruising speed and significantly increases fuel consumption.
Tiny bumps can be seen on the outside of the shell, especially on the apices.
Color variable, white with various shades of purple, concentrated on parietes and base, often on the carina side of the shell.
Etymology. Conopea saotomensis is named after the island around which it was first collected, São Tomé / Central Africa.
