Info
Engyprosopon macrolepis is an inhabitant of muddy, sandy and stony bottoms, occasionally the butt is also found near reefs.
The basic color of the head, body and fins (except the pectoral fin on the eye side) is a yellowish brown with many scattered small to eye-sized spots and rings in white, brown and black, with this pattern the flatfish is hardly recognizable on mixed gravel bottoms and is well protected from predators (except sharks and skates).
In males, there is a row of small reddish-orange spots along the eye patches with many small purple black spots on the front of the interorbital region on the side of the eye.
The body on the blind side has a large dark marking extending from a broad horizontal bar in the center to almost all areas except the abdomen and tail.
The snout, jaw and cheek are marked with yellow to dark orange spots on the blind side.
Synoyms:
Engyprosopon filimanus (Regan, 1908)
Scaeops filimanus Regan, 1908
Scaeops macrolepis Regan, 1908
