Lottia orbignyi (Dall, 1909)
Lottiidae are a family of sea slugs found in cold to warm seas worldwide. They are true limpets, which were removed from the limpet family when the system was revised. These snails are mainly found on the west coast of the USA, there on hard substrate such as rocks, but also on seaweed.
As grazers, they feed on algae growth, microfilaments and crust lichens, which are scraped off with their radula. They are hermaphrodites and develop from egg through various pelagic larval stages to young snails.
These limpets live on rocks in the intertidal zone and in deeper water, where they attach themselves to the rocky bottom with their foot. They eat at high tide, at low tide these snails are sessile and wait for the next high tide.
