Info
Dendrobrachia fallax is one of currently 5 known small Dendrobrachia species:
Dendrobrachia bonsai López-González & Cunha, 2010.
Dendrobrachia fallax Brook, 1889
Dendrobrachia multispina Opresko & Bayer, 1991
Dendrobrachia paucispina Opresko & Bayer, 1991
Dendrobrachia sarmentosa López-González & Cunha, 2010
Representatives of Dendrobrachia are characterized by a horn axis with ridges and spines and by the absence of sclerites, which is an exception among gorgonians!
For this reason Dendrobrachia fallax was earlier wrongly assigned to Anthipatharia.
The first description from " The Voyage of H.M.S. Challanger is on pages 159 - 160 that the two examined specimens were 24cm high and from a habitat of volcanic sandy soils, the report "Two new species of Dendrobrachia Brook, 1889 (Cnidaria: Octocorallia: Dendrobrachiidae) from the north-eastern Atlantic and western Mediterranean" describes a specimen of 16cm.
At the moment there is no colored photo of this azooxanthellate gorgonian available, but what is not yet, can still become.
