Info
Bunodosoma goanense is a large, dark red to wine-red sea anemone, which is so far only known and proven from the Indian coast and from the waters around Singapore.
Suggestions that the sea anemone may also be native to eastern Bangladesh have not (yet) been scientifically confirmed.
Asexual reproduction by cloning is known from other Bunodosoma species, this will also be possible for Bunodosoma goanense.
Bunodosoma sea anemones do not possess zooxanthellae and catch zooplankton of all kinds and sizes.
Bunodosoma goanense is very often attached to large smooth boulders below the low water line, where larger sea anemone aggregations can then be observed.
An additional identifying feature is up to 12 pale yellowish, small bars around the mouth area of the sea anemone.
Etymology - The specific name "goanensis" refers to the Indian city of Goa, the type locality.
Synonym: Bunodosoma goanensis den Hartog & Vennam, 1993
We would like to thank Dr. Shaunak Modi, Mumbai, India for the first photo of this sea anemone.
