Callogobius shunkan is a small goby species with a dark brown head, scattered whitish spots on the body and three blackish spots on basal part of dorsal fins,
The body is also uniformly dark brown with whitish spots.
The first dorsal fin is yellowish brown with five pale pink oblique stripes and the second dorsal fin is dark brown with three to four rows of pale pink spots.
Pectoral fins are dark brown with irregular whitish stripes and whitish margins.
Pelvic and anal fins are uniformly blackish with white distal margin, caudal fin is dark with irregular whitish mottling.
The species name "shunkan" was named after Shunkan Sôzu (1142-1179), a Buddhist sub-bishop and tragic hero of Japanese historical literature.

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
