The brick snail Tegula atra is closely related to the gyro snails and feeds herbivorously on giant kelp (Macrocystis), the red alga Gigartina and the green alga Codium.
Tegula atra is found on rocky substrates, on or under rocks, in crevices, in tide pools, and on brown algae in intertidal areas,
The specimens move on rocks with a light layer of water, their shell is sinuous, purple or black with a white crest.
