The soft coral Lobophytum patulum can form extensive carpets several meters wide, usually occurring on the reef crest.
Colonies are flat with some raised lobes.

Lobophytum patulum has encrusting, cup-shaped colonies, occasionally with some broad, crest-like or superficial mounds.
