Lysmata nilita lives in dark caves, on rocky bottoms and near harbors among red algae from the Corallinaceae family.
This small shrimp is nocturnal and hides in crevices, under rocks or caves during the day.
These shrimp spend the day hiding in the darkness of caves and come out at night to feed on small benthic organisms such as worms, mollusks, algae . among others.
Lysmata nilita is a small shrimp with a massive body, females grow up to 0.38 cm, males probably reach 0.25 to 0.28 cm.
The shrimp is pink, orange or red in color and bears dark transverse bands on the abdomen, the eyes are black and relatively large, the rostrum is straight.
Etymology:
Species name: = The origin of the species name "nilita" is unknown.
When this shrimp was described in 1950, this species name was taken by Dohrn and Holthuis from an (invalid) name of Hope 1851, who in turn had borrowed it from Risso 1844, a name mentioned without any explanation at that time.
