Parastenella bayeri is a rather small deep-water gorgonian that also occurs in lightless marine zones and depends on plankton capture because there is not enough light for photosynthesis at these depths.
In addition to live microplankton are captured and digested on marine snow.

Etymology: Named in honor of Dr. Frederck M. Bayer, the describer of most Hawaiiian primnoid species.
