Info
Calyptrophora angulares is a deep-sea gorgonian for which we are unfortunately unable to provide any size information, as the sources did not provide any information.
Note from 11.12.24: in the work “Review of Octocorallia (Cnidaria: Anthozoa) from Hawai'i and Adjacent Seamounts. Part 2: Genera Paracalyptrophora Kinoshita, 1908; Candidella Bayer, 1954; and Calyptrophora Gray, 18661” a colony is described:
One of the largest colonies (usnm 56822) is 44 cm high and 31 cm wide, including a 21 cm main stem.
However, further details are missing.
The gorgonian occurs at very great depths and in really ice-cold water.
As photosynthesis by zooxanthellae is no longer possible at such depths, deep-sea gorgonians have to meet their energy requirements by catching plankton and marine snow.
The coral is only found in the waters of Hawaii and the Johnston Atoll. There are about 1,500 kilometers of water between the islands, and it is quite conceivable that there will be further occurrences.
