Hydrolithon gardineri (Foslie) Verheij & Prud'homme van Reine, 1993

This species forms piles of loose, prickly balls up to about 12cm in diameter on some shallow reefs. Can be found mostly on volcanic rocks, hard bottom and hard corals.

This algae is locally common in shallow water. Absence of pits differentiate this from corals and bryozoans. Hydrolithon gardineri is an important component of reef development.
