Soleichthys microcephalus (Günther, 1862)

Very special thanks for his photo of Soleichthys microcephalus to John Turnbull, Australia

Soleichthys microcephalus is a rather colorfully banded sole with 11-13 dark brown to blackish transverse bands on the head and body that are wider than the alternating lighter bands, as well as two conspicuous white spots on the midline and a blue and black margin on the dorsal, anal and caudal fins.

The brightly colored juveniles are whitish with black and orange fin margins, mimicking a type of flatworm in both color and undulating movement for protection.

on muddy bottoms in estuaries, harbors and in The lesser sole is known only from the harbors and estuaries and coastal waters of New South Wales, although the Atlas of Living Australia indicates occurrences in Queensland.Rudie H.
