The colouration occurs in patches of red, brown or white. The underside of the arms have an almost smooth structure.
The feather star posesses 50-100 short banded cirri with 15 segments, which extend from the lower hemispherical plate.
Antedon petasus may be easily confused with the smaller feather star Antedon bifida (Pennant, 1777) which has a banded colour pattern of red, pink, orange or yellow and has less 30 short cirri on the undersurface of the central disc.
Antedon petasus is less common than Antedon bifida, both are found in similar locations, but Antedon petasus is the dominant species in the northern deeper and colder waters.
The European feather star may not be kept in tropic-warm tanks, please let the feather star in the sea.
