Info
Dejong's fairy bass from the family Grammatidae is native to reefs of the tropical Caribbean. The fairy perch is predominantly golden yellow and has a black spot on the front part of the dorsal fin. Dejong's fairy bass is relatively small at about 7 cm.
This species is considered largely endemic to the waters around Cuba. However, a single animal has been found off the coast of Little Cayman Island in the Cayman Islands.
The behaviour is similar to that of the other Gramma species.
Moving behaviour:
The transfer of the fairy perch should be done carefully, the fish tend to shock rigidity in the transport bag or after transfer, which however quickly resolves.
The keeping is the same as for Gramma melacara.
If caves and tubes are available, the fairy perch can often be found standing in the open water.
Pair keeping would be desirable, if feasible.
Sex and mating
In addition, the sex of this species is determined after hatching and cannot be changed (gonochoric), at least once they reach a certain size/age. The sex develops during spawning and is determined by the water temperature.
The male fish is larger than the female. Subsequent mating may be successful, but this is not guaranteed. Unfortunately, there is no scientific evidence on this yet. Perhaps subsequent mating is successful if the replacement fish are still very small.
If you have any personal experience or scientific reports on this, we would be very grateful for any information.
The fairy perch was given the species name "dejongi" in honour of its discoverer.
It is hardly ever sold in Germany, but if it is, the price is about 800,00 € (as of 06/2024).
